PublicIm

A way to refer to Instant Messaging services open to the general public over the Internet. Commercial Public IM services include AIM, ICQ, Msn Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. Jabber itself could be considered a Public IM service as well, because public Jabber servers exist and can choose to communicate with other private and public Jabber servers, and thus create a interconnected network of interoperable IM. Jabber is similar to email in this way, allowing a user of one system to communicate with another system by use of an address, or Jabber Id.

It is important to note, that only communication with another APUIM user is secure at this time.
