Microsoft Message on MSN Gateway Login

Microsoft has decided to send a message at login time to all MSN users who are using anything but the latest MSN Messenger protocol a warning to upgrade for security reasons. If you use the MSN Gateway you will receive this message.

You can safely ignore this message.

Unfortunately the APUIM Msn Messenger Gateway is dependent on the older supported Protocol. We hope that a solution can be provided by the time that Microsoft decides to turn off the older protocol. According to the following article from infoworld that will be October 15th.

As with all of the Proprietary IM protocols, it is not possible for APUIM to guarantee continued access to MSN Messenger. However, if the Jabber community finds a way, as the Trillian community will have to as well, we will be happy to upgrade so that we can continue to provide this service.

This is perhaps a reminder of the volitility of the Proprietary Public Im services, and why APU has chosen implement their own service based on an open standard, Jabber. In fact, there is nothing stopping you from inviting others to use Jabber, by having them register with any of the free public Jabber servers out there. They can Download a Free Client, and can then communicate with you via your APUIM Jabber Account. Just simply give them your Jabber Id username@apuim.apu.edu.
